No you don't. Just incorporate some shock cord in your setup to take up the slack.
I would add a loop of cord between the legs of the bipod to limit how far they can spread...could be an ugly moment.

It's two 8' 2x4s attached near the top with an eye bolt. A ratchet strap attaches to the eye bolt, and then to the base of the tree that's too far away.
