One note on the bamboo bi-pod-- if one attachment point is stable, like a tree, the bamboo seems solid (if the hammock suspension is wrapped around the bamboo like pictured, and the suspension is pulled tight before getting into the hammock -- it will sag a good 30 degree angle after entering the hammock), but a treeless hang with two bi-pods is less stable. The steel pipe stand, however, does not suffer from this instability in the treeless hang situation (i.e., two steel pipes on either end, with both pipes guyed).

    anyone already seen this one?

weighs 1.5kg and should be able to hang up to 125kg ! Have my doubts but worth some analysis..

Wanted to drag this thread back up to ask more about the bamboo, as I don't have much experience with larger pieces of it. Is bamboo strong enough to use one piece for a single pole hang? If you rigged it like imrisk did for his single pole hang, it seems like the load would be purely compressive. Seems like it would still be extremely light and could possibly be dual purposed as a hiking staff if you were trekking in an area where you might only have one good tree.

Large enough bamboo could hold, but I would not trust bamboo small enough to serve as hiking pole for the single-pole application you reference. I don't think there is enough margin of error. Also, while most of the force would be compressive, much force would be concentrated on securing the cord/strap to the bamboo and could crack or split the bamboo. For safety reasons I think the bi-pod is the minimum safe configuration.

If you give this a go, please do post your results and show how you attached the cord/strap to the bamboo.

P.S. I am not an expert of bamboo properties, just making a guess here.

P.P.S. Here is my portable one-tree hammock stand. I think the supplemental weight was 27oz excluding the bamboo hiking pole. Easily could reduce weight to about 21 or 22oz.

I've recently signed up to be counselor for Pioneering MB with my son's troop. I also acquired a huge bundle of bamboo for projects, and have been doing some research on bamboo lashings and projects. This page has some ideas you might could use.

I also have an idea for a one-tree, one-pole hang. Not sure if this has been done before.
Rig the pole (10'-ish) to the tree like the boom of a sail.
Hang the hammock off the boom.
The tricky part would be determining the correct angles of the support rope (boom topping lift) and securing it.

Good stuff! If I find a source of bamboo in my area, I'll give it a go.

For now, I'm thinking of trying a single 2"x4"x8' with the edge inline with the ridgeline as a single pole hang from my one tree in the backyard. That or my 6' tall hiking stave I used in scouts 15 years ago. That thing was beefy.
