    First hang failure

    ...So,

I decided not to for go the ENO slap straps and opted for a more custom suspension. It was a nice day in southern Indiana and my webbing finally arrived from strapworks. So, I packed up the toddler and headed out to the park.

Things went pretty well initially. I guess I kinda used my 3 year old as a guinea pig, oh well if that makes me a bad parent. However, when I sat in the hammock there was so much stretch that I just sank to the ground... that's gonna be a problem.

I think the 3/8" polyester webbing I used between the toggle and the ring device was were my stretch was occurring. I opted fro the webbing cause it was flat and the garda hitch I used at the ring device wouldn't damage the webbing like it would amsteel.

So the Hoosier hang is coming up in about 4 weeks and I have to get this figured out by then. I have time to order something else and get it tested before then, but this time it pretty much has to work or I'm gonna be on the ground for the hang.

    Suggestions?

I had an ENO and I ditched the beeners and gathered the ends and used amsteel whoopies. I attached the whoopie slings to the hammock via a larks head knot and used a set of homemade tree huggers from an old 1" kayak tie down strap that I had lying around. Toggle through on a Marlin spike hit h thankee to SHUG for that idea. I am 220lbs on a good day. System hasn't failed me yet.

polyester doesn't stretch much. Nylon does. If that ENO is new it would be my first suspect. After some use it will have stretched out to a point where it is not so noticeable.

Try two trees that are closer, it minimizes how much strap is out there.
The 3/8" webbing is really small, I would recommend an upgrade. Soon!

As grizz said, the new material of the hammock will stretch some.

If the webbing from the tree is long enough you could forgo the toggle and go directly to the descender rings and use them as cinch buckles backed up with a slippery half hitch.

This certainly solved my problem. The hammock nylon didn't seem to stretch much. After reading this I was thinking... "yeah like a suspension bridge, the longer it is the more it sags."

That 3/8" webbing is rated for 1500lbs., very close to 7/64th Dyneema, and it's brand new. Either way, today was successful, although now I'm thinking this ENO is too short for me.

    HANG in there

It can seem pretty quickly overwhelming with all the technical specificifiations on this site... but I can say from personal experience it is worth it. I love hiking with my son and hammockoning is the way to go! I use webbing from tree to hammock via double rings with 'dutch biners' for suspension so that my 8 yr old can set his own system safely... with much supervision of course. Keep lurking for technical tips and be assured that hammocking will lighten your load and increase your opportunity for camp sites in any forested terrain.
