Best side length for cuben tarp with doors

    Hi All

I'm looking into the best size in a cuben tarp.

Right now I'm sold on a 11' ridgeline and 8.8' wide (not that there is much choice there )

One thing I would like is the ability to close the ends up like doors.

Would a 11' side length suffiice or should I go to a 13' side length for the extra coverage. I'm sold on a cat cut for the sides too, only straight ends running up to the ridgeline though.

$$ are an issue as the 13' side are a bit more expensive as I'm pushing the budget further than I should already. But if the 11' ridgeline, with 11' sides wouldn't let the doors close up enough I haven't really achieved what I wanted.....

I would go with the dimensions of a time tested tarps with doors. Wb has some nice tarps. Also Bw.

The length of your hammock is the issue. For example, if you have a 9' hammock and 11' side, then you'll have 1' each end to play with closing for doors which wouldn't be enough.

The WB Superfly is 11X10', and the doors are in addition to that by about 2' each. That'd make the side somewhere around 15 ft. Plenty of room there.

    Thanks for the quick responses.

Just to clear things up, I have a wbbb hammock which really isn't that long compared to some.

My issue is I was going to get a OES cat cut 11x10 and I know the ends of that would fold in like doors, to a degree anyway. The 10' width plays a good part in that role.

Biggest compromise with looking at cuben now is the cap on width @ 104'' due to the raw material width.

I just dont know if the sides staying the same 11' length as the ridgeline will allow it to close up.

Fyi: my tarp now is a OES Standard in spinn, if I go to a cuben tarp in a rectangular cut it will seem HUGE to me anyway. I think either way I'll have ample coverage, I'd just like it to be right as it's a decent investment on a tarp.....

Anyone with 8.5 - 9 foot wide tarp X 9, 10 or 11 foot long with feedback or pic's of it with doors folded in would be great.

here is my DIY cuben...it has an 11' RL, 13' from Door to Door edge with 8.5' walls. 6'8" between the hex tie out points.

Your weight penalty going from 11' to 13' is very small and it gives you end coverage...IMO

I got my tarp from z-packs, my design is

    10 by 13 by 8.5.

I only got a 10 ft RL cause Ive always used 10 Ft RL with my WBBB and although the xtra foot would be nice I found 10 FT works for me and like others I am already stretching the budget. Possibly if you shorten the RL to 10 ft instead of 11 ft you can use the money you save on that to get 13 ft doors, hope that makes sense,
    AC very nice DIY tarp

yea, the "cubed" effect is different...not sure why its there, but appears a part of the coloring process...

DIY is a labor of love...building for others is a JOB and I already have a couple of those!!

PM me when your ready and if I hear of any other people making for others, Ill let you know

For comparison, here's a photo of a DIY 8' 9" x 11' rectangular tarp with the corners pulled down. They don't meet at an even vertical, but they work. They're staked out so they overlap a bit at the bottom.
