How strong is your tree hugging biner?
Just wondering how low I can go...I have a 23 KN (Kilo Newton) one right now that I suspect has LOADS of redundant strength.

I've never used anything but a climbing-rated biner. You won't save more than a few grams over the ultralight climbing biners, and I'd rather use a product that underwent some pretty rigorous testing to ensure its safety, primarily because there are so many absolute crap biners on the market that easily fail at below their rated strengths (I'm looking at you, Home Depot)
If you want to go low - try a Dutch Clip. Gets rid of the spring loaded gate and is specifically designed for webbing. Great alternative to biners, which can rotate more easily and crossload, or worse yet - load the gate directly.
Some of the non-life safety 'biners have held hammock hanging forces for some folks. Problem is that the QC is lacking for these items - or totally non-existant.
Personally I do not want to suffer an unexpected drop onto rocky ground. Heck, I don't want to suffer an EXPECTED drop either.
Life-safety rated carabiners are cheap insurance and contribute to sound sleeping.
Oh, yeah - If you want to shave weight, Dutch Clips cannot be beat.

I'm with you guys. Stick to climbing rated biners if you want to play it super safe (which I do). At only 23g and rated at 20kN the CAMP Nano biner is a winner. The 23kN biner you have is more than strong enough.

The demands placed on a biner, Dutch Clip, or webbing loop can be controled/minimized by paying attention to how the strap is rigged. The more acute the angle formed by the strap where it passes through the biner, the higher the load.
