    WTB or Trade: Top Quilt

I'm continuing my attempt at returning to backpacking on a crazy tight budget. I've managed to score a nice pack darn cheap, I'm building my hammock and trekking poles, among other bits, but I'm going to need a top quilt, at least to start with. I hope to make my own eventually.

Anybody got a 3 season top quilt or sleeping bag under 3.5lbs they're interested in unloading on the cheap?

I'll trade if I can, but I don't have a ton of backpacking related items to trade just yet. I do have the ability to build a rather nice bushwacker sort of wood/esbit stove, as well as custom fiberglass cases as I mentioned in the DIY section. I also have a spare Singer thread injector that with a quick trip to a service bench, ought to make a good machine for the DIYers in the crowd.

Keep an eye out for sleeping bags and down comforters at your local thrift shops, value village etc.Even down jackets can be ripped apart and salvage the down

Thats a good point, I bought a couple of down trench coats at the local good will for about 3 bucks a piece, Iam going to remove the sleeves, Put some Velcro in the arm holes to hold them shut and try them as under quilts, (or top quilts. I figure sew on some tabs down each side and run some shock cord down them would work. Probably about 5 bucks invested. Meadville probably has a bunch of those on the rack at the goodwill/salvation army.

By the way! there is a huge army navy store in Meadville, In fact i was going to try and make the trip someday to get poncho liners for sumer underquilts. You could find something there, I bought compression sacks, bivy bags, and I think a army sleepingbag off of them online, I cant remember the name but to go and buy stuff off of them you have to make a appointment, most of their sales are online, It is a huge warehouse, I know a guy who works in Warren and lives in Meadville told me he knows where it is, I think I will see him monday to get the name of the place.

Myteathor, the only surplus store I know of here in town is Ammatto's in the Downtown mall. They're pretty small, but well stocked. Definitely not a big warehouse, unless they have another facility. I do know there's a surplus supplier that sells on eBay from Meadville. I've bought a few things from them.

If you can get me a name, I'd sure appreciate it! I'll check the two or three thrift stores in town tonight.

    Here ya go Bucko!

    http://stores.alleghenywholesale.com/StoreFront.bok

    here is their ebay site

    http://stores.ebay.com/Allegheny-Sur...id=p4340.l2563

Here is the listings for poncho liners ( i hit the nearest 1st to my location)

    http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_trkparm...4&_sop=7&_sc=1

They would be much cheaper to buy off of without having to pay their shipping total, PM me later and maybe we can hit them up together on some stuff.

Here is the pic of the warehouse they have.
I havent seen it before but most of my stops are over by the channellock plant and the dads dog food plant, Some forge there I go to a few times a month. It would be really funny if its that lil place your talking about and they just took a pic of this warehouse to make them seem bigger! lol

Bed bugs do suck, but if you are on a budget Goodwill is pretty good, Plus they clean their items before sale and salvation army does not.
Its a chance you will have to take to save a few hundred dollars. IF something looks questionable or the store looks bad, then don't buy from there, You can get bed bugs from a new retail store as well if someone with bedbugs tries on something or uses furniture in hotels or public places.

If you want to be sure what you buy is free of them check out this page
    http://www.extension.umn.edu/distrib...ing/M1196.html

Here is a key point of that page.

"Many people may want to discard all luggage and clothing after discovering an infestation, but this is unnecessary. The key is to contain all items suspected of carrying bed bugs in plastic bags until the items can be laundered, washed by hand, heated, or frozen."

I wash every item I buy second hand anyway. I was new clothes before i wear them as well. Just prefer to know that they are cleaned and have my laundry soap and fabric softener.

Bed bugs are easy to deal with though, really, so long as you're careful.

Stick the item in an oven at 215 degrees for about 2 hours. Not hot enough to burn the down, but plenty hot to pop those bedbugs like popcorn. You can also treat the item with Prymethrin in a sealed bag for a several days.

Edit: Holy cats, that surplus place is huge. I'll cruise by tomorrow and see if they have any kind of storefront operation.
