Congrats on the Kid wirerat123. I will have to come home late saturday as I have sunday responsibilities so if anyone needs to just do friday / saturday and you are near huntsville / madison or comming through here we could car pool. Whew that was a long sentence. I am willing to help also spacecadet. cheers
We are in for a strong possible.
I edited the sign up sheet a bit. Seems it's going to be at the Walls of Jericho on June 3-5. Sign up sheet.
So I've never done a group hang nor been to the Walls of Jericho. Do we need to make an itinerary? Do you hike out the way you hike in or do you make a loop? On other hangs they have a section of the sign up sheet for food for a group meal. Would we like to do that as well?
If you don't try due to fear of failure you've already failed due to fear.
I'm in too, barring any work projects that interfere. I was at the Walls just a few weeks ago so I can answer most of the questions.
There are two trails in, one from the AL side and one from the TN side. The AL trail is 3 miles long, the TN is 4.3 miles long. The trails meet at the bottom of the valley, just before the first footbridge over the creek. It would certainly be possible to hike out and back from the same trailhead, or to leave cars at both and hike a semi-loop.
Both trailheads are just off Hwy 79, north of Hytop AL (due North of Scottsboro). They are large gravel parking areas, clearly marked with signage. The two trailheads are only about 2.8 miles apart via road. There is a Horse Trail parking lot near each trailhead, also clearly marked.
Once you hike down into the valley from either TH, the trail crosses two footbridges over the creeks to a large shady camping area at the mouth of the canyon by the Walls. It has plenty of trees for hanging, multiple fire rings, etc. More than enough for a few groups. But, if it happened to be crowded, there is at least one other large site 1/4 mile to the North.
From the camping area, it's about another 1/4 mile along the stream to the beginning of the cliffs at the Walls, and there is a trail both in the canyon and on the upper rim.
If there are any other questions about the area, I'll try to help.

Never having been on a group hang I don't know what is customary food wise. I looked at the signup sheet and 5out of 9 signed up are in pencil. What about everyone bring their favorite camp meal and some of us noobs can get some ideas. Just a thought. Cheers
A group meal would just typically consist of a potluck, where everyone just brings something to share with the group. Doesn't have to be elaborate. I'm totally fine with sharing individual camp recipes if that's the consensus. This is a pretty small group so far....shouldn't be hard to figure.
Does anyone coming have a particular piece of gear they would like to see? I may not have it, but if I do I'll bring it.

Potluck showcasing everyones favorite meal so we know they are good? I am new enough to hammocking that I can't wait to see peoples gear but under quilts, especially DIY. I hope to have my Ray Way backpack put together by then. Cheers
I am pretty sure I can make it, possibly + 1. But I might have to work that Friday. Depending on the final plans, I would like to either head up there Friday after work or early Saturday morning.
Is there an official meetup time or camp spot planned yet?
