DIY hammock stand for the living room.

I made a hammock stand this weekend out of a 6' 1x6, a 8' 4x4, and some 1 5/8 inch fence posts from lowes. Also some misc eye bolts for my whoopies to hook to. I used a 1 3/4 inch hole saw and drilled holes at both ends at an angle (guessed at the angle and had to drill a second one at one end) for the poles to slide tightly into. I used the 1x6 to make two 3 foot long feet and screwed to the bottom. Whats nice is the poles pull right out and it slides under the bed for storage.

I really wanted to hang in my hammock, but didn't feel like being that far from the couch and TV this weekend (just getting over a cold) so this worked perfect.

My wife works nights during the week and is OK with this (if its put away everyday). Now I can sleep in a hammock anytime I like. The storage was the selling point.

I searched for designs and didn't really find anything that's portable around the house. This isn't extremely portable but its about the best I could find. I found a pic of something similar on Google images.

I weigh 160 and I think that is about the max for the 16 gauge fence poles. Maybe some black iron pipe would work better, Any Ideas or comments appreciated.

This pic is from before i drilled the second hole. the pole closest to the camera was to upright making it weak at the bottom.

**** to be 160# again. I've a piece of 4"x12"x10' glue lam beam and thinking 4"x4" angled uprights, will probably weight as much as I do and take a crew to move it. With some lateral bracing to maintain stability it might support me.

It really isn't that heavy with the poles out.
maybe 40 lbs with the poles out. I made another one out of 16 gauge carport 4 ways for the ends then just the center pole and 4 short pole feet. It was really light but the 7 feet center pole would flex upwards on the ends to much. It worked but wasn't super stable.
I recommend using a 10 foot 4x4, The 8 foot is just enough with the angled poles.

This design needs a stronger center brace.

If my wife will sign off on this, you've given me a great starting point. My 200lbs will need more support, but Lowes has lots of pipe.
    Thanks

Got that right. I haven't been 160 since the 8th grade. I was 200 as a sophomore and 225 out of college.

It's pretty impressive work though, for those who have the room it's a way to go.

Nice looking stand. glue/screw a couple of those furniture mover disks to the bottom of your outriggers and it will slide away nicely...

The 2x6 boards on the bottom for support/ feet are shelf boards so they have rounded edges and slide very well on carpet. I def recommend using black iron sprinkler pipe or similar though. Good luck
