    Stream Lesson

Hiked a section of the AT this weekend with the troop...we camped at Quarry Gap Shelter, which was an incredibly well-kept shelter.

We have a couple of "hangers" in the troop now, and more to come.

But I learned an important lesson: Don't hang over a stream. No, I didn't fall in, but the sound of the water kept me up all night. Or at least that is my story and I am sticking to it! Sure, it may have been worrying about getting wet. It may have been the 24* cold air. It may have been the lone wilderness scout, sleeping in a make-shift survival shelter I worried about all night. Maybe. But I blame the noise of the rushing water.

Here are links to some of the photos:

Yeah, yeah, I know, it doesn't look like a big stream, but it was sure big in my mind!

I like it quiet when I sleep. Loud moving water would keep me up.

I camped beside a small waterfall once and after while I thought I could hear rock music playing loud in the woods with people partying and the sound of animals walking in the water but it was just the running water driving my ears nuts. It was great Leaving that site and getting into the woods for some quite time. Water is not always calm and relaxing.

I slept right along a stream bed once. I loved the sound of the water, but didn't have enough insulation and cold air settles in valleys... so I was mighty cold lol. Too cold to have the common sense to move lol.

I'm not inclined to sleep OVER running water yet, but I do love the sound of a nice stream while I sleep. I usually try to get as close to the water as I can. It's especially nice in the Summer when it's around 95º - 100º F everywhere else.

I don't know if sleeping near "running" water is such a good idea. I already have to get up too many times during the night; seems that this would just add to the intensity, and frequency

I've heard that music, and it drives me batty. I usually camp far enough from running streams that I don't have to listen to it. I'm relieved to hear that it's not just me.

I prefer to sleep near the sound of running water. The only noise I don't like is the occasional twunk from an air pocket around a bolder (sounds kind of like something jumping in...). You could always wear earplugs/headphones...
