    How cold till its uncomfortable.

I have an eno hammock with a dryfly tarp. If i were to just use my 20 degree around what temp would be uncomfortable. I know the insulation of the bag compresses so itd be no where near 20 but what about 45-50 degree weather etc? Just curious. I never really backpack in cold weather but it does get chilly in the spring/fall.

it depends on the material of the bag and how much loft it has to start with. But if you want to use the bag to stay warm your best bet is to take a few pieces of shock cord and make it into an under quilt. or if you are looking to save weight just take a wal-mart ccf pad, your main problem is creating a wind barrier, and the ccf pad will do that on the cheap. hope this helps. what part of Knoxville? me and another HF member live in south knox, and we hike all the time, maybe we could set up a hike for the knoxville area?

I've used a pad and my 40 degree marmot as a top quilt down to mid 40's.

If your sleeping bag has a separate zipper along the bottom to vent the foot box, it may be possible to use your sleeping bag in a pea pod configuration and that should get your to a lower temperature.

    Cheers

So in other words your saying I would not be warm enough. I want a simple Yes or No. Would it be feasable to go backpacking with a low around 50 in a hammock with just a 20 degree mummy bag or with the bag and a ground pad.

    Yes.

50 degrees ambient temp with a 20 degree pad on top and a ground pad underneath should be fine.

I have a 20 degree Marmot down bag and a 20 degree Big Agnes synthetic bag. The top part of the bag is plenty warm. It is the bottom of the bags that cause the problem. I have tried partially inflated Thermarest pads and partially inflated insulated Big Agnes mattresses and they help a lot. Nevertheless, I am uncomfortably cold when it gets in the low 40's.

I have not made any heroic mods to keep it warmer. I am waiting for a Hammock Gear underquilt which I hope will solve my problems with the cold and cover me from ~20-45 degrees.

Comfort levels are just personal to say "it will work for you".
Some folks are comfortable at 50*, some at 40*, etc.. The only way to really know is try it out.

With the bag and a ground pad you'd be fine. With just the bag you might be pushing it. I went out with just my hefty synthetic -20 degree mummy bag in the hammock with lows in the 40's and had a cold back.

Yep, I'd take the pad and have it handy, and try it out. If you find you're cold, pull in the pad. And when you get home let us know how it went.
