Couple weeks ago was my first time but I was impressed with the timber
coverage. We've got options depending on the wind direction. Theres a
good stand of timber blocking from the north, some from the south. Walk back
further and a good stand from the east. Thats w/o walking back further
that offers more options. Oh an we're up and away from the lake with trees
in the way, that should help.

I've got a spot in mind that I think will provide good shelter...several pines in the area, and on the side of a hill, that's probably 300-400 meters from the trailhead.

It should be decent wind protection, depending of course on the wind direction.

Weasel and I are packed except for food and water...we'll do that in the morning, finish up my "honey-do" list that I'm sure momma will have, and want to leave here around noon.

We can do a decent recon once we're onsite between 1 and 2 and look for spots.

    West wind

The forecast calls for a west wind.
At one of the northern hangs the camp ground at the top of the hill over looking the lake had a lot of wind. The lee side of the hill a couple hundred feet away had only a breeze. Site location is critical to get out of the wind.

    Understood and agreed, my friend.

We'll try to find us a good spot...odds are we'll have quite a few experienced campers showing up all around the same time...we'll have to establish voting protocols, draft a charter, and establish a new form of government in order to finally find a way to agree on the best location.

Looking forward to see ya'll out there!

With little snow and no water sources, how are you guys planning your water for Saturday evening and Saturday night (quantity & freezing)?
We're going to be near a lake, correct? Is it too difficult to get to the water to pump?

Since we're looking to stage near the trailhead at least for tonight, the lake is going to be a pretty decent distance from the campsite.

I'm leaving my water filter home for this run, and just plan on carrying enough water in for Weasel and I to use out of the car for the next couple of days. We both can carry plenty with us, and refill at the car as needed.

I'd suggest a similar strategy for most...but, hang your own hammock.

Don't know the status of our hangers yet, but the temps did go up a bit last night and here in KC it was about 30 degrees this morning though that wind is a pain. Presently in the Peoples Republic of Lawrence, KS it's 35 and 15 mph winds gusting to just about 30. With a wind break thats plenty do-able though I wouldn't try a campfire unless you were really shielded, less you wanted to put the whole park on fire.

One of the prettiest things I've seen was going home to Topeka from Lawrence one day about 5 miles west of where they are. Came up around the bends on what becomes 45th street in Shawnee county and there was a grass fire on both sides of the highway. A tunnel of Red/orange flames against the pitch black that I rode my motorcycle through.

Anyways, we should hear from the early departers sometime tonight. I think there was one or more that had to leave tonight like I was going to have to.
