    Savage Gulf Overnight(picture heavy)

Due to various reasons, my trip to Big South Fork got canceled, so last minute I decided to head down to Savage Gulf and romp around. It's an hour and 45 minutes from my house, and sadly I had never been here before. I can without a doubt say that I will definitely be going back. This place is gorgeous, with an emphasis on gorge. Huge quick elevation changes almost killed me. 2 weeks ago I sprained my knee, so I took it slow. There are some amazing stone formations, and a nice big river that runs through the bottom. Lots of waterfalls and springs too. I started out kind of late, hit the trail at 230pm made it to camp by 530 though. I set up camp, and realized there was still an hour of daylight left, so I made a 3 mile round trip to go see two more waterfalls. I got back to camp about 15 minutes before it was pitch black dark. Good thing since my headlamp had dead batteries! I checked them before I left and they were fine. Only thing I can guess is that it got turned on inside my pack. I also forgot my trekking poles, and missed them dearly on the ascents and descents. On with the pictures!

A lot of the trail through the bottom of the gulf was nothing more than boulder fields.

The upper trail runs right along the bluff in some spots.

HUGE widowmaker going across the trail.

    Total Wildlife Count:
    8 Whitetail Deer
    12 Turkey
3 People(The Ranger, and two elderly dayhikers about a half mile in.)
More Squirrels and Chipmunks than I could begin to count.
    2 Red Tail Hawks

Amazing place, really liked the "stone stairs" in picture 5 and 6, it's kind of magic in a medieval way... love it!

    Thanks for the pics

Savage Gulf is my favorite secret hiking spot in the southeast. My wife and I hiked all the trails there over a year and a half and that Stone Door Loop with the side hike to Greeter Falls was our first trip there as well.

You'll be glad every trip you take there.
