I got a set of Elephant Trunks from Bloomgorge as a PIF and he asked me to do a review for improvements and such. I thought I would share it with all of you just so you can see how cool these things are. I think Law Dawg did a review as well once upon a time, and you'll see that I have chosen to use them somewhat differently than he did.
The clips are super light. In the range of 30g when I measured them on my scale at work. I say in the range because the scale isn't awesome. I was also really surprised by how small they are! I was expecting them to be bigger for some reason. They accept one inch webbing and they way they are designed they allow for adjustment of the webbing. Adjusting the webbing with them was a little fiddly. You will see in the picture that the easiest way I found to adjust the webbing was to make two large loops and pull through the slack.
So I opted to use them instead of my toggles on my DIY hammock. They excelled at this. I never liked how with the toggles its easy for the whoopies to slip off the webbing knot during adjustments. At first I was worried about wear on my Amsteel, but no problems so far. The Amsteel slides through smoothly and I liked the set up a lot. I wasn't anxious about the whoopie being jarred off the webbing or the hitch inverting on the toggle.
All in all, I'm a big fan of them and am using them mostly as little fixed buckles on my webbing, although I also appreciate the fact that I can adjust them up and down the webbing if needed.
Thanks Bloomgorge! They are a permanent part of my DIY setup now.
