I jumped on the fig-9 band wagon a year or so ago. Got rid of then shortly there after. Its better just to learn how to tie proper knots. IMO.

Being a knot guy (hence the trail name) I like to use knots when possible but since switching to high tech lines that are both slippery and thin, devices like Figure 9's are getting used more and more. Still I think it's good for everyone who ventures into the piney woods to know knots and not just depend on knot replacement devices.

I will admit it, I used a set of Figure 9s on my HH Asm. Within five trips (even though I weigh less than 150 pounds) they cut through the factory standard support line.

Cannot recommend me them for the hammock; but I second user them with the 'biners on your tarp.

I use a knot bone on one end and the figure 9 on the other of a continues ridge line. I used to use the small plastic 9's on my guy lines, but found a simple over wrap around the tent steak followed by a slippery works just as well, just as fast, with less weight.

I use them on my CRL's. I haven't had any wear on my oldest one (over a year old), that's made from SNT line. I've always looped mine twice and then a slippery half hitch, never slipped yet.
