Mrprez, those rules are still good. Like you I am not sure where mayday got his info.

Not sure why people thought you couldn't hammock in the Smokies. I have and I know other folks who have been hammocking in the Smokies for yrs. Too many great places to camp in the park other than the shelters.

If you are at a shelter and it is full you can hang outside of the shelter. IMO you shouldn't hang in a shelter anyway. It is just as bad as someone who decides to put a tent up in a shelter.

Mayday identified the source as a ranger friend, and it is good to know that at least one ranger is hammock friendly. Not new information as far as any rule changes, but could be helpful if there were a difference of opinion as to whether or not a shelter was full.

How does one tell the shelter capacity? Is it posted at the shelter?

I will go with what MrPREZ and Ewker have said...those rules and site selection process are exactly what most people follow.

There are just too many good sites not to take advantage of.

And I will tell everybody where my favorite locations as soon as the others do...but until then "Mums the Word!

I'm not questioning the hammock part, just the part about the thru hiker rules.

Anyone know? The AT guide doesn't say, so not sure how I find out as I reach em.

Hopefully, the capacities weren't determined by the same folks who designed airline seats!

Couple of different options. The easiest is to just avoid the shelters. That can be done illegally (stealth), or by taking a blue blaze to one of their backcountry sites not on the AT. The latter has the benefit of seeing some beautiful stuff that the AT won't show you in the Smokies.

The other primary method is to just wait at the shelter until it fills. If you're with the northbound horde, it will only take about 2 minutes for it to fill. Once it's filled, just set-up your camp fairly close to the shelter and the Rangers and Ridge Runners won't say a thing to you.

Then there is the gray area; hanging inside the shelters. Pretty sure this is technically illegal since there are signs in the shelters telling you not to set-up your tent in the shelters. While not a tent, I think it would be a lame argument to make to a Ranger.

Then again, there is only one Ridge Runner on the Smokies section of the AT on any given day and the Rangers generally have better things to do than go police AT hikers. The two I met (different ones on each end of the park) were both pro-hammock. One let me set-up outside the shelter even though there were only 4 of us counting the Runner. The other one came into the shelter as I was hanging my hammock inside for the night. All he wanted to know was how I stayed warm.

I assume hammocks are still 'all good' in GSMNP? as long as I stay away from shelters
