    whoopie sling question

what is everyone using to fish the amsteel through itself? i seen some sort of wire and some sort of large needle, which is better?

i've searched but doing a search for anything "whoopie sling" brings up a million posts but nothing that i could find addressed what folks are using to thread the amsteel.

    thanks for any help.

oh yea, i'll be working with 1/8" amsteel if that makes a differance

I recently used a length of 19 gauge wire bent in half. It was what I had on hand, but it worked well.

I used a sewing assessory called a bodkin and its worked well. I just bought a loop turner at Joanne's and while I haven't use it yet, it comes highly recommended and look like it will make the job easy.

I have a spool of SS wire that was left over from my motorcycle road racing days. It was used to safety wire nuts and bolts.

You would get better search results by using the term FID, thought VBulliten will return an error saying the term was too short.

    Loop Turner

I use the Loop Turner that krugd mentioned and it works great. It's basically a hook that has a jaw that closes once you pull it back. I like it because it makes it easier to get between the strands of the braid without separating the fine hairs of each strand which might be a problem with a sharp point. I've also used some fine copper craft wire bent over for smaller diameter rope like mason line. Either will work fine.

Lugnut, I use a piece of .035" stainless steel leader wire that is used for fishing. I start with a piece about 24" long and fold it in half. I'll squeeze the folded part with pliers just enough to hold the Amsteel. Works quite well and lasts a long time.

    Wire.
    ~18" folded in half.
Very important: (I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned)
Do a taper. It makes the feed through MUCH easier.
