    Packing wet tarps (Snakeskins?)

Hello there, what's your opinions regarding packing up a wet or damp tarp while backpacking? I have some snake skins, but the guy lines aren't contained within the snake skins. And of course, the skins aren't sealed, so they won't contain any moisture and I'm afraid that my pack's contents will get wet. Thoughts?

+1 Most of my packs (lightweight) have an outer mesh pocket that work great for stuffing wet gear.

+2 on packing wet tarps on the outside. If you don't have an outside pocket, most people use a trash compactor bag, or just regular trash bags to line their pack with to keep contents of pack in to stay dry. If you have pieces of gear that are wet, tarp, tree straps, etc. (I don't worry much about cordage) just put all your wet gear out side that trash bag, and all the dry stuff in the trash bag. Sometimes ill even semi seal it off with a rubben band.

Leave your lines attached. Simply roll them into tarp.
Shake off as much moisture as you can. (most will fly off)
As said, store in outside pocket or strap it to the rear of the pack. If you don't have that option, store it in a plastic bag or dry sack to protect the rest of your gear.

I store my tarp in skins. One skin is sil and the other has a DWR coating. Then they go into the stuff sack. I just pack it in all wet and deploy it first when I get to camp or String it up at home. I have had to drape it over a shower rod to dry inside on a rainy day.

yet another reason that the black bishop bag > snake skins...agreed with poster above me. i just stuff mine in the bag and then make sure i deploy it when i get home. OP the solution for you is suggested by others. Either in some sort of dry bag so that the moisture doesn't get on your other things, or in an outside pocket.

mesh tarp storage on the trail is overrated, since a very small portion of the tarp will actually dry...

I assuming packing the tarp wet is unavoidable, i.e. you're having to pack up your gear in rain. Because I have found, if there's no rain in the morning, taking a hammock tarp, or a ground tarp for that matter, and really shaking the heck out of it with aggressive whipping motion knocks nearly all the water off a spinnUL made tarp.

My tarp shaking procedure has the tarp anchor to the ground or the tree on one end end while I whip the other; works the best that way.

With that effort, the fabric seems to be just damp but not wet. And if you got 30 minutes or more before you need to pack up the tarp, maybe it's nearly dry by the time you pack up with clear skies and hopefully a slight breeze or better.

Regardless of wetness since my tarp is the last thing packed I just fold it a could of times to match the height of my pack, then roll it and then slip into a side outer pocket on my pack.

Now made I'm been lucky, but my procedure for knocking the rain, or dew for that matter, off my tarp hasn't damage the fabric or seams on any tarp I have owed in the last 5 years whether spinnUL or silnylon.

Back to your post on a truly wet tarp, while packing it in the rain, I do the best shake off as possible. Then fold, roll and slip it into pocket as fast as I can as wet as it happens to be. Then on a break under clear skies, re-shake, re-fold, re-roll and slip the tarp back into the pack.
