DIY bugnet 1.0 (3.74oz)

I found some 60" tulle at JoAnn's and bought 7 yards of it and asked them to cut it into two 3.5 yard lengths.

I then sewed it into a "tube" with cord channels on each end which I threaded 1.75mm nylon cord in each end with cord barrel locks on each end allowing the fabric to be gathered tight.

The foot end used a much shorter cord so it doesn't open up nearly as much as the head end that opens all the way.

It is installed over the hammock's ridgeline so it can slide open and closed easily. Every 1.5 feet, I sewed short grosgrain loops along one seam so it can be threaded onto the ridgeline; also preventing it from rotating.

On the same seam, above/near my knees, I sewed in a custom-made small mesh stuff sack for the bugnet to stuff itself into, but usable for lightweight gear storage when inside the bugnet.

At barely under 10.5-feet long and 120-inch circumference, I know that the bugnet is probably much larger than it needs to be. However, the whole setup only weighs 106g/3.74oz so I am not to bothered by it's size. Plus, it stuffs pretty small anyway.

One thought: Instead of GG loops for the ridgeline, you could use velcro loops... That would make it easier to remove for those less buggy times...

Good idea.

Since my bugnet hangs on my ridgeline, I just open the one end and slide the whole netting to the foot end of my hammock. This leaves the hammock open when I want it that way.

One thought: Instead of GG loops for the ridgeline, you could use velcro loops... That would make it easier to remove for those less buggy times...

The only thing you might want to consider with this idea is the hook part of the hook and loop will get caught up in the tulle and at worst cause a big mess (that is unless you use the no snag stuff)

Good point. The sock I made for my son had no top or bottom... loops not needed... Since one end was cut on a curve, it hangs nicely...

All of this, and my tarp, stuff neatly into the Kelty compression sack that I've attached at the head end of my hammock for a gear bag when not in use (seen in a couple photos).
