I really like the diagram. I basically built it from the pictures you posted with the amount of 8' 2x4's. Many will appreciate the measurements along with the diagram and pics you have created. Now... I have an idea that will require some welding. We'll see what comes of it!! Thanks again to you and the others who inspire.

Great diagram and photos, thanks for posting!

    Thumbs up

Thanks!!! These are excellent DIY Hammock Stand instructions!

I just had to build one myself. It's built like a tank and weighs a ton though. . . I overbuilt it and had to use a golf cart to tow (drag) it from the shop up to the yard where it is currently being used.

I fixed the reported flexing problem mentioned earlier in this thread by using 2"x6"x8' boards for the bottom rails, and the angled posts at each end are a full 8' long. The length between the rings is 17 feet. The height to the angled post rings is 6 feet from the ground. The angled post cross braces are 6 feet long. The widest cross brace on the bottom is the middle one coming in at 6 feet. The two cross braces close to each end are the standard 4 feet in length ones mentioned in the plan.

Setting it up in the yard and getting a tarp and hammock rigged up on it got me really motivated to make up a poncho liner under quilt, which I did as well.

A picture of the stand and PLUQ is attached to this post.

Looks great Primitive BowMaker! The extra length between the eyebolts gives you plenty of room for your tarp. Looks like it's going to last a very long time and be a great spot to hang/test your gear!

    Added a Wheel

I added a wheel to make it easier to move the stand around the yard. Works great. I picked up a wheel from Harbor Freight, used a piece of scrap 2x8, some decking screws, and four lag screws. I think I'm going to add some sort of hand hold at the proper height on the opposite upright. That will give me a good place to grab and allow me to lift it to the ideal height every time.

Exactly! This is all pressure treated wood, so it should last a long time. Once the wood drys out a bit, I will spray a couple of coats of Thompson's water seal on it to preserve the wood.

That is a 10 x 12 tarp on it in that picture. With the 2" x 6" x 8 ft bottom rails on this stand, there is ZERO wobble when you get in to, or out of the hammock or move around in it as well.

This setup feels as solid as hanging a hammock between 6+ inch diameter trees.

The triple bottom braces really stabilize the entire stand quite well, and there's no mid section give or creaking when it is being used either.

Overall I am very impressed with the design.

I have a WBBB 1.7 DB hammock that I am going to test hang on it this weekend and see how it performs with the stand. I have no doubt that it will be a perfect match for a little bit of impromptu "yard camping" on demand.

Looking at making a hammock stand, and great information gathered here. My question to you... or idea to ponder and give me your feedback... What if you offset the diagonal supports on the bottom by 3" (putting a 2x4 space between the left diagonal and right diagonal? Why you may ask, I was thinking of making one that collapses inward for storage, and if the supports are offset, it would fold in. Thoughts?
