I use my stand for both and have found they put the same amount of force. Spreader bar hammocks attach to the stand at a single point same as a camping hammock. It all depends on the angle of the dangle on both hammocks.

On TrailH4x's 2x4 stand he cut notches in his. You can make the same portable stand with out the notches. Its all about what you want in the project you build.

Any reason to think this setup would NOT work for me, being 300 pounds? I was planning on buying 2 power pole cut offs and putting them in the ground, but I like the idea of a movable stand better.

I'm currently 245 and had my 15-20 pound beagle in with me last night without any problem. I feel fairly confident that it could hold that much weight, probably more. The only place I see any movement when weight is applied, is in the middle of the bottom rails. An extra foot in the middle might prevent that. Regardless, the movement is slight (barely noticeable), and I think it's a sturdy design. That is one of the reasons I used double uprights. I wanted something I didn't have to be afraid of my pregnant wife using. Another reason is that I wanted to minimize the possibility of the 2x4's warping, bowing, and/or twisting as they dry out in the sun. I might put a few riser blocks under the feet to get it up off the ground a little. That should be easier on the grass and will keep the feet in better condition for a longer time.

That's a great design. I made one like it a couple of months ago and hang in it every chance I get. The wife refers to it as "Noah's Ark". Pretty simple build and very sturdy.

    More detailed photos

Thought I would add a few more pictures taken in daylight so anybody who wants to build one, might be able to see the details better.

    Inspired By JJ

After reviewing this thread, I wanted to try this out on my own. I enjoy hanging in different parts of my yard at different times of the year. This was a great solution to the lack of trees in some of those areas. Thank you Mr. JJ for posting such a simple, but effective, design.

Looks great Nojack! I really like the vertical feet, stronger and won't deteriorate as quickly due to less wood being in direct contact with the ground. Glad I could inspire you. I was myself inspired by many other DIY stands other forum members have built. I finally got around to making a drawing with measurements. I figure it might help someone so here it is...

I built my stand with a single upright on each end and it has no problem holding my 296 lbs plus a dog. Yes the tips flex a bit side to side if I'm swinging in it but I've not seen or heard any signs of potential failure.
