    Pegged Hammock Stand

Just wondering if anyone had any experience making a hammock stand that instead of being rigid uses some pegs or stakes into the ground. Trying to use my fledgling engineer skills to design a stand but not sure what sort of forces you can exert on a stake in soil...

This is the holy grail of hammock camping, there are tonnnes of posts on it. I haven't found any viable backpacking solutions yet however.

If you do let me know.

I know the weight on a single stake is incredibly large.

    Do a search under "treeless".
Should be a couple o' days of reading.

Ok cheers, didn't really know what to put in the search box. I'm on the search for the force a feasible stake can take, I can do the rest of the maths from there I think.

The biggest hurdle to overcome with treeless systems is the stakes pulling out of the ground. Once you do the math you'll see. Most stakes just can't handle hundreds of pounds of pull.

The site appears to be down right now (not that I'm surprised given the number of times I've tried contacting them), but you live somewhere where you would actually be allowed the privilege of ordering one.

    Handy Hammock Struts

I haven't heard from anybody that has actually used them, but the idea seems valid enough to me. They are light in weight and can go just about anywhere. I would have ordered some a couple of years ago, but they won't process orders from the US. Let us know if you decide to check them out and actually get a response from the company beyond "...we are currently busy traveling during festival season. We will respond to your email at our first opportunity". Whatever you do, don't believe that line. Apparently "festival season" is over a year long...and counting.

A guy named Xexorz posted this on another thread. I think he's on the right track.
