    Unhappy 1.1oz Worries

A year ago I made a gathered end hammock from 1.1oz ripstop nylon. At the time I was amazed that so thin a fabric could support my 185lbs. I've only used it at home, never being totally comfortable with the idea of using 1.1oz in the field.

Preparing for the upcoming MAHHA, I got the hammock out and was considering it for the trip but looking at the material I notice many areas where the weave had become disrupted, though there were no actual holes or tears.

Based on the closeup pics, do you think single layer 1.1oz hammocks should only be used by featherweights or is it fine for those closer to 200lbs?

All the threads look intact. Are the areas concentrated in any particular place or are they totally "random"? It looks like stretch marks to me. I'm close to 250 but I have used a 1.1 hammock. I must admit it stretched a lot more than I was happy with, But I didn't notice and weaknesses that would cause me to not use it. As always, if you aren't confident in your gear then either replace it with something you have confidence in, or use it with caution.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Knotty, I made a lightweight hammock for my boyfriend for when he was out running, used 1.1 oz and he probably weighed around 145 when he was soaking wet.

After a couple running tours he pointed out some flaws almost identical to the ones you have there. they were all on the foot end towards the right side. He'd gotten in the hammock with his shoes a few times and that's the only thing I could attribute them to given his freakishly skinny frame.

well my stand on it is i only would use 1.1oz for kids or for anyone under 150lbs ....
i like 1.5oz or 1.7ozfor someone around your weight ....
    for anyone over 200lbs i like 1.9oz
this is just my take on it .....

i know ppl said they used 1.1oz hammocks and there 300lbs... if it was me i would NEVER trust a 1.1oz hammock at that weight ...
even at my weight (210lbs) the 1.1oz i made i can feel the stretch in it..

i think just about anyone you ask has a different stand when it comes to 1.1oz nylon
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I think it also depends on the quality of the 1.1 fabric. The photos look like the Walmart stuff - loose weave, snags and runs easily. The 1.1 I've bought from Thru-hiker and Quest is a much tighter weave and seems much more durable.

I would check the fabric on the ends near the suspension cords. That is where I have seen the most stretch if I am pushing the limits of the fabric. If it looks good there I think elbows etc could cause those stretch marks in the pics

    I hit the ground

I made a gathered end hammock with 1.1 oz single layer and it worked fine for a couple of hangs, then it blew out and dumped me on the ground.

It did not rip on any of the ripstop lines or near the edges or at the gather but completely blew out underneath me.

I was only hanging 8 inches off the ground, so the only thing hurt was my pride!

    I weigh 185 lbs.

I suggest hanging low if you continue to use that hammock.

I was thinking the same thing - the stuff I got from Scott looks a lot tighter, and calendarized pattern is not that prevalent in what I have. Almost looks like taffeta.

I am a conservative, ONLY when it comes to double bottom hammocks and large tarps.
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.
