    I learned something

Last week a buddy and I hung at Jekyll Island campground. Now I know why most of you don't like public campgrounds. I think everybody there, and it was full, wanted to know about and try out my hammock. One guy even said I could sleep in his tent with his wife if he could sleep in my hammock. I did not think it would be a fair trade. In a way it was fun to tell people about how great hammocks are but I got kind of tired of it. Of course part of it was my fault by having the ENO lights set up to make it
Look soooooo cool, as one girl said.

Good story, but that's not why I don't like public campgrounds. It's the public, and all of the trappings of the anti-wilderness that they seem to need to have an outdoor experience. Gringo the Curmudgeon

Yeah, but the ice chests are nice.

It's not just campgrounds. I'd guess I get questioned about every 3rd night I'm in the woods. Some other hiker will come by as I'm settling into, or getting up from a trail-side nap and they just have to know what it's all about. I tend to actually camp a bit off the beaten trail, so camp encounters aren't as common. But, if you are addicted to afternoon naps (as I am on the trail), it's hard to avoid the questions.

Huh, see, my issue with public campgrounds is that tents and trees seem to be mutually exclusive :S

On my last trip to Indian Caves SP here in Nebraska I apparently didn't trek far enough away from the trail.

After the fourth person finally left I decided I'd fall back to my standby... pretending to be deaf.

shrug and point at your ear and make a 'no' motion with your hand.

It's actually quite hard to pull off with a straight face because they IMMEDIATELY start talking louder oh...OH! OK have a NICE day! .. BYE BYE *exxagerate wave* *smile* *point at hammock, thumbs up*

You should have placed info sheets at the front of your hang sight.

First time I slept in a hammock for the night was on a Boy Scout Camp Out. There were two groups to fight off. The other adults who wanted to 'relax' for a bit in my hammock and all the boys who just wanted to see the set and thought it was 'so totally cool'.

I am still working on getting an 'official' camping hammock. But it will be a while before I am back in a tent!
