A buddy on a motorcycling forum that I frequent posted up an invitation to meet up near Meadows of Dan, Virginia, at a motorcycle campground called Willville.
Since my wife was busy Saturday and Sunday, I decided to load up some hammock-camping gear and head up Saturday morning.
Since I was getting such a late start on the 275-or-so-mile ride, I decided to head up on the -- blech! -- Eisenhower Interstate System.
I did the Interstates up to Fancy Gap, VA, then caught the Blue Ridge Parkway for the last couple of dozen miles or so.
A stop at the rest area/welcome center on I-77.
Fancy Gap and the trip to Meadows of Dan was foggy and rainy. I got to the campground, said some hellos, and set up my hammock in a nice little area across a little stream from the main camping area.
I set up in the rain. What fun!
(this pic is actually from the next morning.)
I visited with some buddies through the evening and met some new folks, then turned in for the night. The rain had let up in the early evening.
I slept great, and I woke up to this view. (Sorry for the picture quality here and on others; I only had my phone's camera on this trip.Doh!)
I packed up Sunday morning, said my goodbyes, and headed out.
It was a beautiful, crisp morning.
I spent pretty much all day Sunday riding the Blue Ridge Parkway from meadows of Dan, VA, down to NC 215 west ("south") of Asheville, NC. It was a great day of riding.
Here are a few more pics from the day.
Briefly, I was the only person in the world who was in two states at once on the BRP.
There was a detour onto NC 18 that took me through Sparta, NC.
I love what my hairdresser, Helmet, does with my hair.
I explored a little gravel around Alta Pass.
I saw a buddy from Georgia at an overlook west of Asheville, turned around at the next chance, and met him on the road. I caught him at the same turnaround that I had used, about to turn around to chase me down.
He had a new-to-him '05 Yamaha FJR that he recently bought and that I hadn't seen.
We rode together for a while, then went our separate ways home.
It was a great couple of days of riding and hanging.
