The simplest right out of the box is the strap and buckle system. That is what I have on my loaners, my wife's and my son's.

Whoopies are lighter and there's the DIY coolness factor that has me using them.

My advice: Keep it simple but don't settle. Start with straps and buckles then experiment as time and resources allow to see what's best for you.

i went from the strap system on my wbbb to whoopie slings and used them with the biners i got on the warbonnet.

spikes and that just add more complexity i feel.

only thing with whoopie slings is i found they stretch a lot more than the original system so i have to get the height right first with weight in the hammock as adjusting later with the whoopies is arduous when i've got kit in the hammock

    maybe that's just me

i kinda over killed the massive lengths of the tree huggers and whoopie slings like i would be attaching to giant redwoods or something

Been there, done that with most every suspension system out there. In the end, I've come back to descending rings, 1" webbing, and Dutch Clips. I use biners on my loaners for the sake of ease and I'll switch-out to whoopies if the hike calls for every gram savings I can find. I don't believe there is a more simple solution than rings and biners. It's just a very easy and convenient way to suspend your hammock.

OTOH, whoopies are way more fun to make.

+1 for simplicity - webbing and a cinch buckle, or two rings per side

Unfortunately i do have slap straps...thats why i am asking around...

How much slipping occurs on the rings vs. buckles, buckles vs whoopies, and so on...slap straps need not to apply

I've never had a whoopie slip, stretch, etc. It helps to "milk" the braid over the bury before loading them.

Back to the original question, IMHO straps and buckles are the simplest. Backup the buckle with a slippery half hitch in the tail of the strap and you shouldn't have any problems with slipping.

This spring at the Grand Canyon, while setting up my wife's hammock (UQ, etc) the whoopie came off the not onto the toggle...when she got in, the toggle (a stick) broke in a few minutes and sent her to the ground (thankfully soft)...

I'm sure the whoopie was on the knot beforehand...I've now caught this another time. Now I know that the jostling of setting up UQ, pads, TQ, etc. can knock the whoopie off the knot...

Has this happened to anyone else?

DD - Yours isn't the only story of toggles snapping when the whoopie popped off the marlin spike hitch. It's not something I want to worry about so I use carabiners. At 23g each (CAMP Nano), it's worth the piece of mind to me.
