    To the OP: It's up to you. Amsteel is not cheap. You could always try mason line, if they can master that, then they can do amsteel next. I actually think the mason line was easier to make the locked brummel and whoopies with.

    Mason's line is tiny, but cheap so I see your point... I'd almost give them enough to make a soft shackle. Then lose an oz or two and give them mule tape... Focus on the more usable skills, un, like Sewing... Yes, splicing is cool, but most won't ever do it again... TYOBS (Train Your Own Boy Scout!)

    We had our spring camp-o-ree this weekend and I found it was pretty easy showing kids that were genuinely interested how to splice an make their own whoopie slings.
    Silver on the Sage, Starlit Sky's above, Swingin' from the trees in a Hammock that I love.....
