    Where to get fabric??

So apparently the fine folks of the Portland area have something against Walmart and there are only about three in the whole area, none of which are very convenient for me to get to regularly. Just wondering if there are any other good places you guys know of to keep an eye out for cheap fabric.
Do you ever find Silnylon at Walmart or other places? If not, where would you get it? It's seems to me that would be the best to make a tarp from.

Here are a few popular spots to get ripstop and silnylon. And yes silnylon is the best material to make a tarp with.

I don't mean to discourage you, but I have found that the best place to get fabric is at Wal-Mart, but if you can't get there, asking for seconds for fabric stores might be a good place to look. If I were you, I would just make a quick stop at Wal-Mart when you're in the area. Good Luck!

Walmart is a crap shoot. You have to know what you are looking for and looking at. The people working there are zero help. I find 1.9 untreated and 1.1 DWR on occasion. I have yet to find sil.

I would not depend on finding sil at any walmart. Some people are more lucky with that than I am. It is easier just to order it and be done with it.

    Thanks,
If I still lived in Texas and went to Walmart everyday, I'd keep an eye out for it there. But I'll burn more gas going to the ones around here to make it worth while. I've been looking at Speer's site seems to be about as good as I'm going to get.
I've been asking around and I've got at least one place I want to look locally before I order online.
Thank you all again for the help.

I live within 5 miles of two Super WalMarts and have been going to both of these for MONTHS. So far, no nylon only polyester in the cheap bin. A couple of people mentioned to me that they like their polyester hammocks so I'm giving that a try for my first DIY hammock. And I paid a higher price of $3/yard for my camo materials.

I never make a special trip to WalMart just to look at fabric. You could go broke doing that! You factor in the price of gas and you'd be better off buying online at the higher prices plus shipping IMHO.

I've also been told you might have better luck at the regular smaller WalMart stores -- that they have better sewing and craft sections. We had a regular WalMart a few years ago and I do remember it having a much larger sewing section. Too bad it "upgraded" to a super.
