    Defeating the purpose...?

Hi. I am new to this whole hammock thing. I am waiting on my Hennessey Ultralight to arrive. I have been reading about all the quilts people use. Under quilts. Top Quilts. Doesn't all this quiltage kinda defeat the purpose of the idea of lightweight backpacking with a hammock system or is it still more advantageous than a tent?

Hammocks have a number of advantages, among them that they can be part of a lightweight backpacking system, but that's not the only reason to try them. Tents can be lightweight, too, and sleeping on the ground (ugh) under a tarp (mmm) is probably the lightweight winner. Experiment with your hammock to find the right mix of comfort at night and comfort on the trail.

Does a sleeping bag defeat the purpose?

A Top Quilt is the top half of a sleeping bag, and and underquilt is the bottom half of a sleeping bag. It's just that the underquilt is below the hammock itself, to keep your body's mass from compressing the insulation.

My hammock (GT Ultralight) with whoopie slings weighs 10.75 oz
My UQ (Baby Orca) weighs 8.5oz
My tarp (cuben fiber) weighs 5.2 oz

    That's 1.52 lbs

I have a 4 season tarp that weighs 22 oz, which would change the total to: 2.57 lbs

The TQ would be the same if I used a hammock or tent, so doesn't matter.

That's light, and far more comfortable than any tent or shelter I've ever slept in!

It is really about different names for the same purpose -

Hammock - Tent (Since the trees are providing the structure, no poles are required)
    Tarp - Rain Cover
    Top Quilt - Sleeping Bag
    Under Quilt - Sleeping Pad

It just works out that the hammock is more comfortable and each hammocking piece tends to be lighter than its counterpart.

    YEAH!! What they said!! LOL!!!

I used to think and say the same things....after carrying both and deploying both...the top quilt and the under quilt are way lighter than carrying a pad and sleep system...not to mention the space saved in a rucksack....apples to oranges ? not even close! they are fruits and we are talking about things to keep warm in.....much love to the elders here! Will work great for a top quilt. If you lay INSIDE the sleeping bag INSIDE the hammock, you will be compressing the insulation and will probably get cold underneath. I'd suggest adding your sleeping pad as under insulation (until you graduate to under quilts) as the pad will provide some insulation even though compressed.

I have a 3 season Incubator UQ, but no TQ, yet. I just use a sleeping bag that I already had. The one I have used the last few campouts was a 30deg bag. I stayed very warm. The sleeping bag, while not light, (about 3.5 lbs.) it works for now.
