I'm planning a trip to the Savage Gulf this weekend with a couple of ground dwelling buddies. Do any of you have suggestions for which trails to hike and where to camp for a 2 night, 2.5 day trip?
Also, I noticed that there are designated camp sites on the map. Are there also unmarked backcountry sites or is it best to stick to the stuff that's on the map?
you have to stay at the designated campsites. You will put them on your permit when you fill out. The rangers do check the campsites to make sure you are there.
All of the trails there are good to hike.

We have not decided yet. It will be one of the two with a ranger station so that we can get our permits and hop right onto the trail. I'm leaning toward Stone Door so far.
BTW, how does the Weather.com forecast usually compare to actual lows? I know when I go to Sipsey I always subtract 10 degrees for the low.

Stone Door trailhead is really nice. You can make a nice loop hike out of it. You can take the Stone Door trail down to Big Creek Gulf trail and follow it up to Alum gap campsite. The climb out is a butt kicker. There are side trips to Ranger Falls and Greeter Falls you can do. Depending on the rain you may or may not be able to cross the creek to get to Ranger Falls. From Alum gap campsite you can take the Big Creek Rim trail or the Laurel trail back to the Stone Door Ranger station.
If you camp at Alum Gap campsite the temps will be fairly close than if you camp in the gorge. Sawmill campsite is the only campsite in the gorge

Thanks Ewker. I think we are going to come in on the Greeter trailhead tomorrow night and camp at Alum Gap.
Where are you planning on going?
Before you leave your car at the Greeter Falls trailhead you might want to check with the rangers. It is kind of off the beaten path compared to the trails that start at the Ranger Stations.
We are going in at Savage Falls and coming out at Collins West hopefully

I agree with what Ewker has said. It's hard to go wrong at Savage Gulf. One well-known landmark is Hobbs Cabin. You can stand in the cabin (first come, first serve as I recall) or the nearby campsite. But the whole area has plenty of waterfalls, views, and trails.
