    Finished my DIY Stand

Well, after looking at some of the DIY stands on here, I had to build one, and can't wait to spend a night in it. It feels very sturdy, and was not too hard to build. I need to cut the bolts down flush and smooth the edges to ensure no snags on my hammock or tarp, but I hung the skeeter beeter on it today and plan to put the Blackbird on it tomorrow.

That looks great, exactly the kind of stand I would like to build for the backyard. If you get a chance, it would be good to see how the BB hangs in there!

Did you use one of the plans off of the forum, or is that your own design?

    Cheers

Pretty much used what was on the forum. I tweaked the measurements a little not knowing the exact measurements of the others on the forum. Plan to hang the Blackbird tomorrow....

That is super cool. Any chance you might post dimensions, parts list, etc? Since I got no trees, I'd love to build something like that.

Well, you may have to work some of your measurements out to best suit your needs, but below is a write up of what I did. I am no engineer or architect, but the stand feels nice and solid. I am considering adding diagonal braces from the end of each foot up to the upright just to add a little more stability, but I don't think it will be needed. However I do weigh 290 pounds, so any extra stability is appreciated. All in all, I spent $40 of this, but I had the nuts and washers and the 5/16" threaded rod already.
    ______________________________________________

    9 - 2"x4"x8' treated boards
    20 - 1/2” nuts
    22 ½” washers
    1 – 6’ piece of ½” all thread
24” of 5/16” all thread (I had this already, so you could use something else if you wanted)
2 – ½” forged eye bolts rated @ 2200 lbs safe working load

I cut 10” off 4 of the 2x4’s. These 4 boards would be used as the uprights and the 10” pieces used as spacers. I then cut 2 of the 10” pieces in half, leaving me with two 10” spacers and four 5” spacers. Next I cut another 2x4 in half to use as the upright braces and another 2x4 in half to use as the feet. I placed the 4’ foot pieces on the floor and then placed two full length 2x4’s on top of the foot pieces to use as the base.

Next I drilled a whole through the end of the two base boards, two 5” spacer blocks and the 4’ upright brace and attached them all together with an 8.5” piece of all thread. This whole was approx. 2.5” from the end of the base board. I repeated this on the other end of the base as well.

Next I attached the uprights and 10” spacer blocks to the base approx. 22” from the ends of the base using more all thread rod. This made the uprights and braces all attached to the base.

Next I play around with adjusting the uprights and braces until I got the distance I wanted between the tops of the uprights, which I wanted to be approx. 12 feet to accommodate my tarp. I nailed a piece of string to the top of each upright brace and tied a washer to the end to make a plumb bob so I could get the angle of the braces the same on both sides. Once I got everything the way I wanted it, all lined up and symmetrical, I drilled through the upright pieces and the braces and tied them all together with a piece of all thread rod.

Next I cut two pieces of 16” 2x4 and used as spacers at the top of the uprights. I attached these with more all thread. Then I drilled through the 16” block where I wanted to place my eyebolts to attach my hammock and installed them with a washer on both sides.

Lastly, I attached the foot pieces just in front of where the braces hit the base and I used the 5/16” all thread to bolt them to the base pieces. I counter sunk the nuts on the bottom of the foot so it would sit level.

Nice. You'll be able to sleep soundly knowing your stand is rock solid.

I will likely build a second one soon, my son wants to hang with me in the yard. Gonna play with this one a few days and see if I would do anything different before building a second one.
