    Chat?

Just wondering if any of the management here has ever given any thought to a chat room on this forum? I have been an Admin on a motorcycle forum for the last five years and we put a chat in about 4 years ago and it's been a hit for the members and gets a lot of use.

    Just wondering

That has been suggested a few times, most recently here and here.

The biggest issues with chat is that people that aren't online when chats are happening don't benefit from the information later, like a forum thread allows. Also, chats tend to wander wildly in topic, sometimes into arguments or non-family-friendly topics that are outside of HF's focus.

To let you all know I have been involved with Fly Anglers Online for a long time and they have a very active chat room. The only way it works well, and how they do it, is to have scheduled moderators each night that help police the area and guide the chat along. Never have had any problems over there because of it. Usually the chat may have a main focus at a certain time each night because of the expertise of the moderator but that does not mean that it is so structured that other things are not discussed. Lets say someone wants to know about suspensions they can look at the schedule and see that Wednesday night @ 7pm there will be someone there that can answer his questions. Works really well as long as you get enough people that are willing to volunteer there time each week for their time slot. And this is not to say that it has to be open every night, maybe you start out with three times a week and let it grow from there.
