Did this really take me an hour to set up?

Well guys, yes it did. But that’s why we practice before we go into the bush, right? My tarp and paracord came in and I went for it. This was my first attempt at ridgelines and hammock hanging together. My whoopie slings came in too, but haven’t decided on tree straps and toggles yet.

ENO DN, BCUSA tarp and crap straps

If you don’t recognize the tarp it was purchased from bushcraftoutfitters.com for $60. It is a 10x10 and I really like all the tie out points it has. I tried a couple different ways and I decided to go with the tee dee, I think that’s what I read its called, ridgeline for the tarp. I used the prusik knots and a really cheap, small, lightweight carabineer for attachment. It was pretty windy today and I see the need in snake skins. Think I might try them for my first DIY out of an old military mosi net I have laying around. You will also notice in the pictures that my suspension is not at the recommended 30 degree mark. I am still having a hard time getting the HANG, insert cliché laughter here, of it right now. It is really hard to judge with the amount of stretch the slap straps have. At this point when I get in the hammock it is a perfect 30 degrees with only about an inch off of the ground. The crappy thing is that I have to be on my tip toes to get in. That’s some stretch people. Anyway, thanks for looking and open for advice and tips on my set up.

Ya gotta start somewhere. There are alot of ways to do setups. You will find what works best for you. I'm still pickin up things here and there. You are lucky to have those nice hangin trees BTW! Looks like a great backyard hang spot.

Way to get it done and you've got a nice setup there! Practice, practice, practice... learn from what you did last time and go out and make it better the next time. I learned a ton when I attended a group hang so if there's one near you soon, go to it. My suggestion is to get polyester straps to replace your Eno Slapstraps. The Slapstraps are nylon and when weighted for a long period of time - when you sleep - they'll stretch leaving you, as you stated, an inch off the ground
Work your setup until you're comfortable. Who cares how long it takes to setup, just get out there and hang!

    Only took you an hour!?!

Not bad. Practice, practice, practice, and when you're out in the good ole wild woods, with everything set up and you "...just settled...for a long winter’s nap..." the rain and wind will hit and down will come the straw rig. Then you will find that time is truly relative and it will seem like HOURS to re-set it up. Just my humbled experience (time after time).

    Welecome and congratulations!

very nice! im jealous of all the guys around here with great looking trees in their yards. think of all the practice you can get! im new around here too and to hammock camping, so when i did my first hang it took me about 10 mins to get setup. but i was only doing my hammock. i dont have my tarp or uq finished yet so i imagine my full set up will take an hr too. good luck to you though!

    1) Like everyone said: practice, practice....
    2) You already know. You can't hang from crap straps.
You may find this poll/thread insightful. Or at least interesting.

Welcome! Good to see another BCUSA guy here. Great combination. Never used ENO anything. I did, however, get rid of my Hennessy suspension in lieu of DIY whoopies. I use ratchet straps(less ratchets) and Marlin Spikes for the huge trees here in the NW. They compliment the whoopies well and are inexpensive. And I can use the ratchet straps for their intended use. I like the multi use items.
