Winter camping - snow in pockets

Anyone tried snow in the underpockets for winter insulation? Either loose, or in a ziplock? I would think this would be roughly the same as stuffing with leaves etc.

Also in the vein of why this makes sense is building snow caves/igloos/snow pits etc.

I dont think it will work the same, for one reason: In a snow cave, for instance, you arent dealing with wind. A snow cave is VERY small-for instance, you wouldnt be able to sit up-usually, its just long enough for you, and wide enough to turn around in while lying down. This reflects body heat. Putting snow underneath you defeats this by introducing heat-stealing wind-one thing absent in a snow cave. And, snow caves are "tolerable". They certainly arent "comfortable". They hover about 35* or so, and get wet. Snow in baggies directly against your backside wouldnt work.

Interesting idea. I would think you would need to use a pad of some sort just to keep your body heat from melting the snow underneath you.

I know when I sleep on snow, even with a pad, I usually end up with a big chunk of ice underneath me. Luckily it is perfectly formed to my shape.

You could end up with chunks of ice that are hard to remove from the pockets plus a wet hammock.

Ya, thats why I thought ziplocks might be good to contain it, yet still provide the air space

An appropriately rated underquilt would work much better

If you going to carry ziplocks, just use them empty but inflated.

speaking of fires- out in west texas, the firefighters are putting things in the way of the wild fire, on fire to keep the big fire from going that direction, so.. yeah.

+1 on just using the empty but inflated ziplocks, =airpockets without the heat sucking snow.
