    Applied preassure on straps

I was testing out my diy tarp in my yard yesterday and the guy who got me into hanging stopped by to take a peek. This was also my first time hanging my hammock on my new tree straps with biners, so I asked him about Biner weight limits and if the hanging weight was devided because of two mounting points on the hammock. He told me that not only was the weight not split but it was actually multiplied because of the angle of the suspension pulling on the tree. I weigh 285 and have been hanging on a diy hammock with just some 3/8 poly rope with tons of stretch hence the switch to a new suspension. I have an ENO Doublenest in the mail and will be using 2" poly straps for suspension rated at 800 lbs , what weight should I look for in a biner ? Will my 450lb biners hold? Is there a formula on droop and sag that someone could point me to? Ive searched for a few days now with no luck. It looks like everybody sets up their rig a lil different, high, low, tight , saggy . It would be cool to see a written explaination why someone chooses one setup over another. Thanks in advance - Bob

You generally don't want to use anything in your suspension system that's not rated for about 1000# or more.

Here's a chart to help you with figuring the loads. If you're suspension is at 30 degrees from horizontal then EACH side of the suspension will take a load equal to your weight. The reason for the 1000#+ rating is you still need to account for dynamic (shock) loads and have some safety factor.

    The chart that Knotty posted

    pretty much says it all.

I never carry a chart with me, but I just use the rule of thumb that if one's suspension (straps, lines , whatever) are at 30 degrees to the ground, the tension on EACH ONE will be equivalent to the weight of the hanger.

My experience is that my hammocks (HH and CJH) hang more comfortably with 30 degrees and NOT tightly strung. YMMV.

Thanks guys. I actually found that thread about 10"30 last night using the word "angle" in my search bar. Im gonna print and laminate that one. there was another one that had the distance of the trees in the equasion too, but I lost it.
Man have I been doing it all wrong Never heard of a suspension ridgeline until I got on here either, that one is gonna be a "must do" on my double nest when she shows.

That chart hurts my brain. I'll just stick to 1" straps and 7/64" and/or 1/8" amsteel. Peace of mind and all that...

The carabiners you want to be using are ones rated for climbing like Camp Nano or Mad Rock (just two of the lighter ones out there, there are others), these are rated in kilotons! Or you could look into getting a pair of Dutch Clips (my choice would be these), now these are made for 1" straps, the Biners you can use your choice width of strap!

just a friendly note-not kilotons but kilonewtons, it taks 224.8 pounds to make one kilonewton. in the case of the madrock trigger wire, that is something like 2.5 tons... still a lot of weight for an opening device

Ooops yes you are correct, don't know why I wrote kilotons???

Either way this is the type that should be used if a biner attachment is your thing! If it isn't rated to climbing specs (life rating) in my opinion you are asking for trouble! Just my 0.02$!!!
