    another option for you

Hey from central Cali. North Cali folks call us southern, South Cali folks call us northern, but we're just out here in the middle.
I actually recently moved down to OC from Atascadero. If you miss out on the lottery, another option is to hike it from the back side starting at Horseshoe Meadows if you can get time off for a longer trip. Its easier to get a permit (no dealing with the lottery). I did that trip in 5 days in 2009. You see a lot less people too!

Welcome from San Diego! We need more CA hangers!
    Thanks!

It's funny, all of the pictures I see have trees everywhere, i'm trying to recall all of my backpacking places to think if there are places to hang. Funny how it's never something you look at until you're interested.

Funny, I was always wondering what that back route was. I remember the first (and only) Whitney hike i did.. my wife and I hit the upper camp by noon with our three friends about 2 hours behind us. Ate lunch, dumped our stuff and hiked to the top. Came back down around 9:30 at night with it already freezing and our friends asleep to find out i'd left the fuel canister for my stove in the car!

Good times. A multi-day trip would be nice. My wife and I were practically running out because we wanted to get down to our other campsite and pack up before having to pay for another day since we were heading over to Lundy Lake (by Mono).

Welcome from Gadsden, Al. It's so humid here, if you don't use a tarp you wake up wet from the dew. But you shouldn't have that problem.

Quick question: does a tarp help keep in any warmth at all?

Nope. Mosquito netting, or a top cover, will hold a few degrees in, tho.

I suppose saying "I hate you" is not the best way to welcome a person into the forum, but I'm pretty darned jealous. The SLO area is wonderful. Whenever the crew (AKA my family) and I can take off for the coast (VERY infrequently), we usually head toward your neck of the woods. This summer we'll be doing most of our traveling in the Sierra's, but as always, I'll be lobbying for a coast trip as well.

    Glad to have you aboard!
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

No but it sure does block the heat robbing wind if set up properly.

mmm, excellent! my warbonnet net will help me out

yeah, SLO County is hard to be beat in terms of overall gorgeousness I came down here in 95 to go to school and haven't left since.

and if you like wine, this is definitely the place to be. awesome wines, without the snobbery of <that other place up north>.
