Tent fly as a hammock tarp?

Someone please tell me what Im missing here. I bought 3 tents with broken poles and ripped bugnets at a yard sale last year for $7.00. I opened one up the other day to source some netting for a DIY project and out pops this massive rainfly, so I go to the backyard and hang it up to find it about the perfect size but it sags in the middle a bit. Now here is my question, what are the cons of using this as a hammock tarp? It keeps a tent dry, already has tieouts sewn in , I like the color, I can hem that extra bit of fabric out of the middle to make it taught. Someone please tell me this will work or they have done it. Thanks - Bob

it may be a bit heavy, but if you think it would work for you, try it! Using a continuous tarp ridgeline would probably help with the sag. Most importantly, if it works, pics or it didn't happen lol

Pics will come indeed . I think I will use a continious RL above the tarp and sew in a couple loops to pull that slack up instead of getting rid of it. I dont like tight spaces and dont really care about weight. I will have to fiddle with this a bit. Just wondering why more people dont use yardsale tent tarps.

If the poles for that tent are still in good shape, you could try putting one in place when you hang the fly to take care of the sag. It may just eliminate most of the sag and provide you more room under the fly. Of course this depends on the design of the tent/fly/poles.

A lot of people here like to go light weight. And tent rainflys often have strange cuts to suit the tent, making it difficult to use with a hammock.

Here are pictures of a tent footprint as a rainfly - totally works - if you don't mind the weight, it's one of the best (for the price) ways to go. Bought this 10x10 6 person tent footprint from REI Outlet Online for $20, but it weights a little under two pounds I believe - something to the tune of 26 oz if I remember correctly. I've been using it for months and Im waiting for my Zpacks tarp to come in.

I second that, I also bought 10x10 unscathed virtually brand new footprint at an REI garage sale for $1.83, no that wasn't a typo, just might want to seam seal it if applicable.
