I have been looking for webbing in local stores. Have found cargo straps and also webbing sold by the foot, but in both cases no where does it say on the webbing or packaging what it is made of. Is there any way to tell nylon from polyester or polypropylene by looking at it?
no, nylon and poly both smell distinctive when burned though, that doesn't help yu unfortunately.
you're better off buying somewhere online where you know what you're getting

Check out the manufacturers forum. Arrowhead Equipment, Jack R Better, Whoopieslings.com to name a few all sell webbing.

if your buying by the foot you might take a look at the spool, it's being draged off of. the end plate should have the information you seek. it might take a bit of cyphering but probably well worth the efford
polypropylene melts at the lowest temperature, then nylon and then polyester. But the melting points of nylon and polyseter are pretty close together.
If you decide to run a test in a retail store, don't mention my name.

Probably not a good idea to regularly smell burning plastics though.
I bought a load myself on eBay and there were several sellers who all quoted polyester, nylon etc and some even quoted breaking strengths, may be worth looking there.
