    Onyx Down Quilt

I thought I would post some pics of my latest creation: My Onyx down quilt

    Specs:

    50" x 80" .95oz Momentum90 shell, black on black
    3" Nanoseeum baffles (15% overstuff. Aprox. 4 - 4.5" loft)
    ~19oz 750 fp down
Weight (includes stuff sack) 1lb 15.9oz (WOOOHOOO under 2 lbs baby )

It's gonna be my big 'ol winter top quilt but it has the ability to used as an under quilt. It's also just barely big enough to cover both me and my wife should we ever have the need to crawl under a quilt together (wink, wink. nudge, nudge. Know what I mean?). I have had all the materials setting around for about 7 or 8 months and I just got around to building the quilt. I am very happy with the outcome. I thinking that it should keep me warm into single digits. I can leave my Western Mountaineering Apache at home now, saving me about 8 oz I think.

Hammock Engineer split an order of down before he started his thru. He has mentioned before that although the down is rated at 750 fp, I really think it's 800+ fp. It was some really nice stuff and my quilt has great loft. Much better than I expected.

It was a long, nerve racking process that I don't plan on going though again anytime soon. Enjoy the pics.

From the look in her eyes I'd say she's ready for a little wink wink nudge nudge. That must be a good quilt to get her all frisky!

Seriously, looks great. I hope to one day be brave enough to try a down quilt. When is the testing?

That looks like some great toasty warm goodness. It kind of looks like mine but way warmer.

I am really happy with the mom90 and down combo. I'll have to remeasure mine, but I don't think I lost much if any loft over it's use.

HC4U : Between NCPatrick's quilt which I saw live, and now yours, I am positively inspired about working on a DIY down 1/2 UQ for my bridge hammock. I'm committed financially now and the down from Speers arrived in the mail yesterday.

I'm a bit concerned about that "long, nerve racking process" though

I've been trying to talk the wife into making me close to the exact thing, maybe not so thick, and with 1.1 DWR. Looks awesome, nice job.

HC4U, that's an awesome looking quilt. That Momentum 90 is really nice, too bad it's so expensive. Enjoy it!

    Excellent job!

    I'm baffled?

    Great Down Quilt !!!

I am still learning how to sew, so I have limited knowledge about designing or construction of a quilt. Instead of cutting individual baffles and sewing, can you use a weave (like in attached file)? Or is this how the baffles are installed?

Interesting idea. I don't see way it wouldn't work to some degree. I could see problems getting the loft thickness what you want. It might shift a lot.

Then again, if you figured the netting is going to take a straight shape you could take it as the hypo of a triangle. Then do the math back from there.
