    being allowed to hang

I live in the panhandle of Florida in Panama City Beach, the original Redneck Riviera…lol

I have called several of the local state parks and national forests about using a hammock and so far all I ever get is “no you can’t use a hammock here.” The reason I called in the first place was a post I read that said that some of the parks do allow it.

What am I to do? Educate these people about the benefits of hammocks and there ability to “leave no trace” with “tree huggers”. Or do I use the old adage “better to ask for forgiveness then it is for permission”

That is incorrect information. You CAN hang in national forests. Last I heard you can also hang in state parks now. PM jaxhiker or samsara and they will be able to get you the information you need.

I have hung at Torreya State Park on a bluff over the Apalachicola River. I have seen others hanging there. Rock Bluff 5.jpg

"Hammock use and any other associated lines may be attached to trees that are minimum of 12 inches in diameter measured at chest height and using a minimum of 2 inch wide flat web straps. Some parks may provide hammock posts instead of tree"

State parks require 2" straps for both hammocks and tarps, and they require you to hang from trees that are a minimum of 12" diameter at chest height. This is spelled out under the "Camping Rigs" section of the FSP website.

National forests require 1" straps for the hammock; many of the established campsites now rent out straps specifically for this purpose.

None of the water management lands I've hung on have any restrictions as to hammocks, as long as straps are used and good LNT principles are followed...but none of those have been in the panhandle.

    Hope it helps!

How do you hang your tarp with straps? Do you use cinch buckles?

MSH would probably be easiest. If you use a mini 'biner as the toggle (this is okay, since it's not a life-bearing application), you can still use Dejoha's method for attaching the tarp. Otherwise, it'd be a simple task to tie off to the strap above the toggle.

    Hope it helps!

    Woof!
Is the regulation for 1" straps in National Forests and 2" straps is States Parks just a Florida thing or are we talking nationwide?
Looks like I need to do some homework!

The 1" straps are nationwide in the US National Forest system, where national forests allow hammocks.

The 2" straps are FL state parks specific (and are required for both hammock and tarp). I've seen a couple of comments here and there on the forums about other states' state park systems requiring certain widths, but I can't remember specifics. 1" seems to be the standard for most places in the US, though.

Either way, if you're not hanging on private land owned by yourself or a friend (with whom you've already checked this out), please, please, PLEASE use a minimum of 1" straps for your hammock. This gives the impression of good land stewardship to land managers, rangers, and owners. Which means that the rest of us get to continue hanging on those lands. Whether or not 1" straps actually protect the trees (I think they do, but I'm not an arborist and can't back that up with anything more than personal anecdotes), they give the perception of good LNT practices, which is a Good Thingtm.

    Hope it helps!
