    Your comfortable minimum coverage?

    Hey guys,

    Wondering how you guys get on with minimal tarp cover? How small do you go?

    I just weathered my first mediterranian summer storm. Because it's mild and generally doesn't rain much here I've been using the golite poncho tarp set up on the asym. My hammock is on the long size, 3.5m, and it only just covers the ends. I stayed dry with some misting and a little rain catching both gathered ends.

    I've been thinking about poncho tarp designs, as well, and think you could get a larger tarp size using a different shape. The golite is a long rectangle, with the bottom section velcroed up when used as a poncho without a rucksack. If the tarp was a parallelogram with the 'inner rectangle' matching poncho dimensions you could use the golite Velcro idea to fold in the two triangle 'wings' of the parallelogram. Should give more even cover than the long rectangle on the diagonal, right?

    I'm not sure I'm sold on the poncho tarp, does anyone combine a tarp and a poncho? I've had good coverage using two ponchos but the setup was tricky.

    I have a Hennessey and have spent a few torrential downpour nights under the stock fly. Stayed perfectly dry, although I was down in a valley and not much blowing rain.

    Not sure I would ever want to go smaller than that.

    ^ lol I'm not sure you could go much smaller than the stock fly and still cover your whole hammock. That said, I'd feel comfortable under the stock fly for the late spring to early fall season in anything but sideways rain. I think you can tweak your location to provide enough coverage with that, but if I was going to be somewhere that it rained a lot, I'd want either an under cover for the bottom of my hammock, or a slightly larger tarp.

    That being said, I'm no gram weenie, and with the availabily (finances permitting) of cuben fiber, it seems foolish to sacrifice coverage for weight... I plan on stepping up to a slightly larger tarp later this season, to take me later into the year. I think a mid-sized cat-cut hex will be my go-to.

    Shug that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for as far as a tarp. Both size and cut. I want some info too! ...And I think I want it in Cuben.

    Good to know. What's the length of your short sides (Bottom edge)? I think I'll just buy some raw CF and go at it (after I practice my shape on something cheaper first)... I like DIY stuff...

    I have;
    Kelty 12X12

    AHE Toxaway HERE

    AHE Shangri La HERE

    The Shangri La is about as small as I would go. Gotta try the Shugster's small tarp set up with the Shangri La and Toxaway for giggles (the Shug makes me giggle...sorry to admit).

    I am not too concerned with weight because I car or canoe/kayak camp so I really like a BIG tarp. I am currently using the Kelty Noah's Tarp 12 and I am working on a DIY with a 12' Ridgeline but I have successfully ridden out some severe thunderstorms under an ENO dryfly
