How does the ridgeline work? (A free body diagram would be helpful.)

I may be mistaken but shouldn't the FBD forces follow the lines of the ropes? Ive done a bunch of FBD since Im a Bio-systems engineering student (lots of mechanical engineering courses) but its been awhile.

My educated guess is that it increases the angle that the rope makes alowing for more "sag" with less rope.

Here is my sad attempt at explaining this using MS paint. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.

Physics? No clue. It does allow you to have a consistent amount of sag each time for a more comfortable hammock regardless of how far apart the trees. There are some other folks here who not only understand physics but also dole out a fair share of it in their designs. Grizz comes to mind.

I already see that I missed a tension force on the end of the hammock going back towards the ridge line....

That is 2 days in a row... with this algebra stuff...

Am I doing something wrong.....I even went back and actually read the directions andI thought it was just a simple... hobby.....

I am to old to take any math classes............and all that time I spent in typeing class on those type writers turned out to be a wast of time....

Now the basic math classes I slaved in ( back in the 70s) appear to be useless or out of date when it comes to hammocking...is it just me......

the RL holds the ends of the hammock at a fixed max distance from eachother, this makes it so you can't stretch the hammock out beyond that by tightening the suspension, this is useful if you need to pull the suspension tight to enable a long hang for instance, or anytime you need to attach lower to the trees than normal
