    shining rock wilderness question....

Hi everyone....I am planning a late afternoon jaunt into the shining rock wilderness tommorrow...I am planning on taking rd816 off the blue ridge mile 420 i think...I think I'll have time to put in about 3 miles or so...

Anyone know if there is hanging ops towards sam's knob or little sam's knob , or Flat Laurel? I hear there are lots of meadows/balds. ..

I seem to remember the vague existence of another type of shelter I could use in open areas if there are no trees, I think I may even have one in my garage somewhere if it came to that...man , that would be desperate.

I am open to another route as well...

    thanks to all

I do not think you will have any problems find a place to hang.

North side of Flat Laurel can be difficult to find adequate trees, although it is possible. A few weeks ago for our last night we camped in meadow between Sam's Knob and Flat Laurel and it took me hour to find a spot. On the south/west side of Flat Laurel are many trees that are suitable. So far on three separate 4-day trips, I've always found a place to hang.

If you take the Flat Laurel Creek trail south out of the parking lot, after it hangs a sharp right, along both sides of the creek there are several good places to hang.

There is a large stand of spruce right behind the parking area that has an abundance of options. Even though it's really close to the road, it's big enough that you don't feel crowded. It'd be a good option if you don't have much daylight left when you get there. Walk to the far side of the trees and set up, and watch the sunset over Sam Knob. Beautiful.

I know there are places to camp up on Black Balsam/Tennent Mtn on the Art Loeb trail, but last time I was up there was pre-hammock, so I don't know about spots to hang.

That's one of my very favorite areas to camp. Pay attention for rattlesnakes. There's enough people use that there are plenty of mice = rattlers.
