    Tree straps

I was looking at harbor freight and found these
    Lashing straps

    330lb working load...
seems like a low rating... maybe because the hardware is rated that low?

    Anybody ever used these ?
any thoughts on using for tree straps ?

Louie, working load limit is generally 1/3 of the breaking strength, so you're looking at~1000# breaking strength. Those straps wouldn't be my first choice, but I wouldn't hesitate to hang from them, either. And the price is right.

    Hope you're well,

I use them. Granted, I've tied each into a loop with a water knot, and thus far the trees I've used have been thin enough for me to larks head each one around the tree, thus doubling it up (its like having a 6 foot tree hugger). I'm going out next week and the trees will be bigger, so I might have to untie the water knot and go single-strand--if I hit the ground, I'll let you know

By the way, an easy way to remove the clips from the straps is to put two round files into them, cross them into an 'X', and simply pull the clip apart--no muss, no fuss.

I'll be making a trip to H&F this weekend for the exact same reason (my mom got mine for her DIY gathered end on mother's day).

I read somewhere that in situations like that, the low working load rating was usually due to the cambuckle.

the straps have a loop in them...
I was going to just cut the hardware off and use the straps as is...

I keep reading about loop size..
what are the benefits of different size end loops ?

Those are the straps I use. I weigh around 240 and have had no problems at all. Having cut the cam-buckle off, I definitely believe they are the reason for the lower rating. They are cheap metal. Easy to cut through. Also there are other straps at Harbor Freight that appear to be the same strap with bigger, bulkier cams on them, and they carry a much higher rating. I use a carabiner through the loop and it holds great. I've also just run the strap through the loop it's self. Also tied my own loop into the strap. All work great.
