    Suggestions for a starter hammock

This forum is great and you guys are so helpful. I am looking for a starter hammock. I am 5' 10" and 210 lbs. I am looking at a hammock setup that has the netting included. I've read about the Skeeter Beeter Pro and the Byer Moskito Traveller Hammock. What do you guys think....or maybe there is another one you can recommend. Other options?

I highly recommend the warbonnet blackbird. But, it's what I have, and it's my first "real" hammock.

I also didn't want to spend too much, just in case hammocking is not for me.

Claytor Jungle Hammock, or at 5' 10" the Expedition would work too.
The Ultralight Skeeter Beeter would work too and it's $20 less than the Pro.
ENO, Trek Light, TTTM with a net would be a little more than $100 and are very comfortable hammocks.

Honestly, I'd look more at the hammocks than the netting. Netting is easy to add after the fact with bugnets and not really necessary in most cases. Since your bag or quilt is covering most of you anyway, all you need worry about is your head and neck which are pretty easy to cover for cheap. If you do like hammocking, might as well have a hammock you like already. If you don't like hammocking, they sell pretty easily around here.

Making a gathered end hammock is really easy and there are countless instructions out there. I think mine cost less than $30 in materials and only had my Mom sew the edges which you don't necessarily have to do for testing purposes.

I made one while waiting on my HH to arrive 3 years ago, and this past weekend I put the Hennessy away and took my home made one with me. Turned out to be more comfortable.

Give it a shot to see if hammocking is for you or pick up an ENO and try it. Worse case scenario is you have a great lounging backyard hammock if you don't choose to camp in it.

That's understandably, but with the quality gear from the vendors on this site, it's possible to sell your gear with minimal loss - probably a cheaper way to try out hammocking than to buy something you can't sell afterwards or sell with big loss.... just my 0.02$

If you sew, you could get a hammock, bug net and suspension for less than ~ $50 and a weekends worth of time. Buying one completed, you are looking at a minimum of two and half times that amount. You also have to think about insulation and a tarp as well.

$50.00 for the FIRST one, you mean...

After that you will be hooked, and will have to keep on spending and collecting hammocks and tarps and underquilts and overquilts and carabiners and...and...

    well, you get the idea.

I just got into hammocking and wanted to try it out before committing a lot of $$$ to it just in case it wasn't for me.

I bought a Grand Trunk Ultra Light Travel Hammock for $20.00 from Sunny Sports when I ordered my Tarp.

I got a chance to try it out over the week-end and it is the perfect starter piece.

I will be building my own hammock later on using all the DIY info on the forum, but for now this will do for the first season.

If I had it all to do over again, I'd get the blackbird. If I absolutely couldn't stand it I'd sell here and be out very little. I'm sure if you didn't like whatever you got it'd sell here easily. And if you do like it, you'd have a great hammock
