I always go on the side of caution when it comes to weather/sleeping. Just this last weekend I was out for hike and had to fall back on an old blue sleeping pad because it got colder than predicted. I tend to be a hot sleeper and can normally get away with less insulation than others, but man I am happy I brought it along.

I hear you! I have been out when it got colder than predicted and spent a miserable night. I made a 2/3 length UQ made of down with sewn thru construction (no baffles). I always take it. The weight is 10.6 ounces with suspension in the stuff sack. That insurance of a good night's sleep is worth hauling the extra weight.

Fathers day weekend I was on a canoe trip. Great temps, but still had the UQ. I put the UQ on the hammock and it was too warm. So I just pushed down one side and pulled it from under me. So basically the UQ was beside me and not under. Then as the night went on, it got cooler, so I just had to pull it back under me. Was easier then having to get up in the middle of the night and hang it. Just my .02

In general I'm a fairly warm sleeper, but I find under insulation is entirely unnecessary only in the upper 60's (best guess, no thermometer). That's not to say I can't or haven't slept in lower temperature with out, but there are typically cool spots under the butt.

+80*F nights. Cold sleeper. Even at 80*F when the breeze hits the bottom side I feel the cooling effect. Worse case if over insulated bottomside is just vent the uq or slip the uq off to the side. Discovered this forum after a butt chilling attempt at hanging out in relatively mellow conditions (mid 50's). Figured something was definitely not right. Never even knew uq existed.

Tried sleeping in the hammock in my backyard last night with my 3 season set from HG. It was 56 degrees and I was so hot I couldn't sleep. I even pushed my TQ off of me completely but was still way too hot. I was too tired to get up and vent my UQ so I finally went inside at 5:30am. On another night it was real windy and I was too cold to sleep in the hammock at around the same temp. All I had was a stock HH tarp so the wind just sucked the warm air out of my UQ. Quite the difference at the same temp when there's wind and you have a small tarp.

Just came back to the forums after a few months of being away..

Since that post, i have never went back to NOT bringing the UQ and it became a part of the minimum hammock setup to bring ... never asked myself the question if I should bring it since then and never been sorry since.

Is it normal that i sleep better in my hammock than my own bed.. or is it the outdoor sleeping..

Thank you guys for your input!

Nope, it is not normal...that you still sleep in a BED

Sleeping full-time in a hammock for months has relieved back pain and knee pain, now I cant sleep in a bed without waking up sore, stiff, and tired.

    Sleep on it!

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but if it were me and the weather held hot, I'd put my UQ inside the hammock and sleep right on it. Compressing the quilt will reverse its insulating and make a soft comfy bed. Is this a no-no?

If it's warm enough to sleep without an uq why expose the uq to body moisture? When real hot I appreciate any air movement through the hammock material. Makes sleeping in a hammock in hot weather a bit more comfortable than on the ground. Find a properly suspended hammock real comfortable. Not sure if a uq sandwiched between the body & hammock would improve the comfort of the hammock.
