    Mayan or Brazilian hammock

This is my first post, and I'm looking for suggestions on which Mayan or Brazilian hammock to get for sleeping indoors. I've been using Ozark Trails air beds for the last few years, and have never used a hammock but am ready to move up. The hammock is to be used for sleeping every night in my house. I've been measuring and envisioning having hammock hookups in every room, including the living and dining rooms, and outside.

I'm 5'9 and 145 lbs, and want to be able to sleep diagonally, on either side or my back. I usually move to different positions quite often through the night. I'd like a warmer hammock, so a tighter weave will probably be better for me. The lowest cost quality hammock that works for me would be good, preferably $40 or less, possibly up to $100 at the most. I'd like the most comfortable hammock for different sleeping positions, for the price, that will last a long time.

So far I have found a few Mayan hammocks on Ebay that look good. If it's okay to post a few links with comments, let me know and I will do that the next post, or will just post comments about them if that's better. I've been telling everyone I know and meet about hammocks this past week, and am very excited to get one and get it hooked up right away.

    Mayan vs Brazilian Hammock

These are the two hammocks from Ebay that look the most feasible.

    Mayan Hammock
This is a cotton hammock with nylon strings, is 5 feet wide, 6"7" long, 13.33' in length and holds 478 pounds. The weight of the hammock is 2.5 pounds. $45-55.

    Brazilian Hammock
This is a 100% cotton hammock, 5.5 feet wide, 12 feet long, and holds 240 lbs (update: seller says 400 pounds). The weight of the hammock is 3.75 pounds. The weave looks very tight, which I like, and it's a very nice looking hammock based on the photos. $100-117.

I like that the material in the Brazilian hammock looks much thicker, and it weighs 50% more. That is the main positive that it has, and also it looks very nice. The hammocks are about the same size, which looks to be a good size for me. I am tending towards the Brazilian one because of their being more material and the weave being tighter.

Do the nylon cords indicate the Mayan hammock should be stronger and last longer?

Does a tighter weave and more weight of material justify twice the price for the Brazilian hammock?

i sleep in a brazilian hammock in the colder months, then switch to a mayan for summer.
if you go with a mayan i would not recommend anything that is less than 8' wide. 10' would be better, the brazilians are normally longer and narrower , which means that you sleep on less of an angle.
the brazillian xl that creative kate mentioned is a nice comfy hammock, i have the same one with a fringe
    good luck

At the site you linked to there is a hammock hung on a large diameter tree.

Do you think a length of "Tree Hugger" wrapped twice around that large tree and then attached to the ends of the "spreader" rod/bar would make for a more secure/stable hang? It seems it would be less tippy, what do you think? I have had this idea in mind for some time to try a DIY bridge.

All of the existing cords could be eliminated.

hmmmm, I'm broad in the shoulders and need a wide bridge. I'm a side sleeper and turn completely over to my other side several times during a night. Multiple prostatepee breakes during the night gives the hammock a workout getting in and out. I hung in my bridge several times this past winter to see how it compares to my BB. It seems to be on the narrow side. Wanting to try something wider. I'm a noob to hanging. Wanting to learn more.

although at first glance tying a spreader bar hammock the way you are suggesting would seem like a bridge, i don't think it would be as comfortable as a real bridge hammock, the brazillian hammock suggested be kate and shadow alpha would be my recommendation as well, although the most comfortable hammock i have ever slept in is my tommy hamaca XX GRANDE from seaside hammocks
