    Made my decision...HH Expedition Zip

I finally made the decision to buy the HH Expedition Zip. HH vs Warbonnet. Warbonnet may be better, but I couldn't pass up the deal at REI. 20% off and my dividend....comes out to $110. The bad thing is that I have to wait because REI is totally sold out on all Hennessey Hammocks. Not a single one in stock. They are on backorder, so I have to wait til mid June. I guess I just have to have patience.

I like how the marlin spike hang works. Can I make it work with the stock suspension? Or is there a better way?

Hi, congrats on the new hammock almost! As for the Marlin Spike Hitch (MSH) with the original line, you'll want to change it out most likely but it should work fine with the stock line. Make sure to pick good toggles that won't compress and crack or anything.

Yep the MSH will work, but depending on your weight
you might by with a tautline hitch (add extra wraps) or need to use some
other good hitch knot. I'm only 150 and the tautline with extra
    wraps held me...

I'd get longer straps too, specially if your planning on using the MSH... Its not a
problem to change out the stock cord. I put whoopies on mine, as have many others....

I'm sure you'll enjoy the new hammock...

If I switch to whoopie slings, how long should each be. Is it easy to make or should I make them myself? Is it a big cost difference?

I made mine, there not very hard and lots of good resources here if you want to try. I watch several videos, but found a pictorial instruction post by Opie and really used it for a reference as I went a long.

I look working with rope, so I never really considered buying pre made ones. Just do a search for whoopies and you'll get lots to read and view while you wait in the hammock...

You want each whoopie to be 3-9ft long but 6ft is the standard. There is a relatively large cost difference in making your own, to buy a set it would cost you ~$14 plus shipping. To buy the amsteel it's 20 cents a foot plus shipping. So you can get 30ft of amsteel for $7.50 plus a couple dollars shipping. For a fid, just use a 20" piece of small gauge (24 gauge works great) wire, fold it in half and you're good to go.
