    4 season protection question

I'm researching tarps right now. I currently have a MLD trailstar but its not ideal for hanging. I mostly do 3 season backpacking/camping but would like to extend into winter a bit.

Could I get away with using a Warbonnet BMJ without doors in snow? I'd be in SoCal mountains in winter time, so it wouldn't be as severe as some places. Right now I don't have the cash to add the door kit, although its something I could think about for the future if the BMJ won't do it on its own.

You could easily use the BMJ for 4 season use without doors. All it takes is decent site selection. If you're looking for mostly 3 season and mild winter use, The BMJ is a great tarp as well as the OES MacCat Deluxe.

Other fellow with MLD Trail Star. I have some pics in thread about using it as a hammock tarp. It is not ideal for hanging, but actually quite good for cover.

I would not suggest using BMJ in winter without doors. Problem is not snow, but wind. In my experience there should be something to block the wind from sides. Otherwise tarp can become a cold wind tunnel. So MLD is as good or as bad as BMJ without doors as a winter tarp (BMJ little lighter, but not as good in cover).

I would suggest the new Superfly (doors sewn in). Here is my trip report/review from winter 2010.

But because I'm a big fellow, I myself am trying to get a bit bigger cuben trap from Z-Packs, a new not yet made three panel design that costs about 600 $. I hope it will be in my use for next winter.

Sure you could. Doors and beaks are a relatively new feature. Just a few years ago, nobody had them.

As mentioned previously, site selection is the key.
