    Help! A line broke

Asking advice on best practicesfrom th ose who know rope and line.

I've packed 15 meters of that ridiculously light Dyneema line, say a spool of Zing it or similar.

Say a tree strap or a suspension line broke.

I want to know the right way to use multiple lengths of the light-weight dyneema (or other dacron) line to get me back some length. No point in popping one strand after another by not using multiple strands optimally.

Or is my best bet, in the field, to knot the old strapping or line?

Assuming you can't get out to get a replacement, you might get away with simply tying off a tree strap, as for suspension I'd replace it if I had a sufficient replacement with me. Of course the best thing is to sleep on the ground so as not to cause damage to another part of the hammock.

At least that's my feelings on it.

If your tree strap broke and you still had enough length left to get it around the tree and with a knot in it, I would tie it back with a water knot. It is used in climbing when tying pieces of webbing together for anchors and the like.

If you wanted to only use the zing-it line you had. This assumes you also had a climbing rated carabiner to use. If you are also familiar with rock climbing, this is an extension of the wrap 3 pull 2 anchor method with webbing to a tree. The idea would be to wrap all of your line loosely around the tree and tie the ends together with a square or reef knot (you want to get the knot undone at some point). Then work the line until the knot is against the tree and the loops of line all come together then clip your carabiner through the lines and attach to your hammock.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers
