I'm drawn to the open country. Its where the world makes the most sense. When I put myself out there I always return with something new.

+1 on animatedknots.com. A great reference, with a lot of knots. The animated sequences have been very helpful.
The knot I use the most is the Tautline. My rafting partner taught me this one, and we use it constantly on river trips. It's the knot we use to tie up our boats. We can lengthen or shorten it as needed with the water level. Plus we use it when we're tying out the big group tarp. Now I use it for the guylines on my hammock tarp.

For me it really was my grandfather. Though most were fishing knots. I added a few over the years via the net and books.
Animatedknots.com is definitely a great resource.
I learned most of the basic knots growing up. More advanced knots I learned in taking a technical rescue course in college.

Q! Haven't heard from you in awhile. Miss ya!
My dad was a fisherman, I grew up in a sailing community, and was in scouts from the time I was 7. Lots of knot tying. Plus I had to learn to untie the knots that my brothers tied when they lashed me to a chair or a tree, so you can't help but want to know which knot they used.
The Ashley Book of Knots, endearingly referred to as ABOK. You will often see knots labelled as ABOK # 2357 or some other number. Ashley numbered each and every knot he listed with hand drawn illustrations. He subdivided the knots into various categories which makes it easier to find a knot for a specific purpose.
It is the go to place for practically all knots.
It is currently out of print, but the last time I looked you can still get copies from Amazon. There are pdf copies floating around on the internet, but the ones I have found are simply pages after page of scanned images so you cannot really do anything interesting on the computer that you couldn't do with the real thing.
There have been knots invented since it was published, but really not that many and a lot of the knots invented since are just old knots rediscovered and renamed.
Little book: "Collins Gem SAS survival Guide" for me.
Bunch of climbing knots in the Marie Corps for Mountain Warfare training.
A bunch more as an Asst Scoutmaster and from this forum.
